Santa Fe Prep Library was New Mexico's first LEED Gold Certified building. The library did not start off to be a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rated green building. An anonymous Santa Fe donor launched the initiative by bringing the energy consulting services of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to the project. In the course of the discussions regarding energy conservation, it seemed apparent that the school's values would mesh well with the LEED rating system by going beyond mere energy conservation to incorporate other environmental features, such as water conservation and low-toxicity building materials, into the plan. |
